What is Facebook? welcome_3.gif

Did you ever wonder what a person means when they say: “Facebook me later” or “I will win the poke war” or perhaps you’ve heard “I’ll write it on your wall”. Well it’s time to crack that code and become connected with everyone you know by joining this wonderful friend connector tool!!!

Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

Anyone can join

All that’s needed to join Facebook is a valid email address. To connect with coworkers or classmates, use your school or work email address to register. Once you register, join a regional network to connect with the people in your area.

Discover people around you and keep it private

Facebook is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, or school. Join the networks that reflect your real-life communities to learn more about the people who work, live, or study around you.
People can only see the profiles of confirmed friends and the people in their networks. You can use our privacy settings at any time to control who can see what on Facebook.

Discovery Resources: Facebook and other Social Networking Sites

Facebook is much more than a social networking site. It can also be used as a professional communication tool as well as a way to market and promote your library ’s services. Several academic librarians have communicated with students in Facebook to provide research help and announce new programs or products. Below are few articles about Facebook and social networking sites in general:

Discovery Exercise, Begin Facebooking:

  1. Go to http://www.facebook.com/
  2. Click sign-up and fill in the information asked for, when you’re done click Sign up Now.
  3. A confirmation email will be sent to your account, check it and complete the process from the link in that message.
  4. Then you’re done and READY to BEGIN!!!
  5. Search your local regional network or the Nova Southeastern network and send a friend request to co-worker or classmate and try posting a message to their wall.
  6. Or try finding a group that is of interest to you and join it!
  7. If you really want to add some *bling* to your Facebook account, peruse the Facebook applications and try adding one to your account. For example, try the Flickr Application and add some of your Flickr photos.

Groups of Interest to look for on Facebook:

  • Librarians and Facebook
  • Student Services in Libraries
  • Library 2.0 Interest Group
  • Digital Reference in Facebook
  • NextGen Librarians
  • American Library Association
  • No, I don’t look like a librarian (just for fun!)

Note:  Facebook is just one example of a social networking site.  Depending on your interests and the connections you want to make, you may want to try other sites like LinkedIn for example.
