Teen Poetry Slam Guidelines

• The Slam will consist of three rounds.
• The order of performances will be chosen at random.
• Each performer will have a maximum of 3 minutes to perform.
• All works of poetry must be original.
• At the end of each round, poets will be eliminated from the contest until only one is left standing.
• The use of props, costumes, or musical accompaniment is not permitted.
• Performers must prepare a minimum of 4 poems to perform.
• Performers must be between the ages 13-18.
• Performers must adhere to all judge rulings and library code of conduct policy.

Teen Tech Week: Mix & Mash by Jamie

Contest Rules & Guidelines:
Create an art sculpture for display in the Library using old or outdated pieces of technology in celebration of Teen Tech Week: Mix & Mash.
• Works must be created by a teen, ages 13-18
• Works must be no larger than 24 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 24 inches tall
• Works must not contain any items that can cause mess, harm, or damage to the library
• Connections to electricity will not be available
• Works may be created at home or in the library’s Teen Room during specified times
• Works must be submitted by 6:00 pm on March 11, 2011
• Exhibition and judging will be at the discretion of the Library
• Contest winners will be notified by March 28, 2011, and need not be present

Exhibition is to be held in the Alvin Sherman Library March 14-21, 2011

Hang out in the Teen Room! Play PS3 & Xbox360 video games, watch movies, or even do homework! The Teen Room is open after school and on weekends just for teens ages 13-18 whenever a Teen Room Host is available.

January 8 – Teen Volunteer Orientation, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, for ages 14-18.
Earn community service hours for school! Visit the PLS Desk on the first floor of the library or http://blogs.library.nova.edu/teenroom/volunteer/ for applications and instructions. Applications must be submitted prior to orientation and applicants will be contacted via email on a first come, first serve basis to attend. Limited spaces are available.

January 11 – Mix & Mash: Technology Collection, for ages 13-18. Drop off old / outdated pieces of technology all month long to be used for our Teen Tech Week project in March. Old cell phones, cassettes, Nintendo games, records- you name it, we can use it all! Items do not need to be in working order!

January 11 – Teen Manga Club, 5:30 to 6:00 pm, for ages 15-18. Join fellow Otaku (fan of manga) and discuss your favorite shōnen and shōjo! Cos-play is optional and costumes must follow the library’s dress code.

January 11 – Teen Video Game Club, 6:00 to 6:30 pm, for ages 13-18. Come share your favorite video game codes and cheats while you play PS3 and Xbox360 in the Teen Room!

January 12 – Free Sketch Teen Art Club, 5:30 to 6:00 pm, for ages 13-18. Like to draw, design, and inspire? Join fellow artists in the Teen Room to practice your skills and share techniques. Bring your own materials.

January 13 – Fantasy Fanatics’ Teen Book Club, 5:30-6:00 pm, for ages 15-18. This month’s book is Brisingr by Christopher Paolini. Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, continue to struggle against the evil King Galbatorix in the third book of the Inheritance Series.

January 19 – Banned Books Teen Book Club, 5:30 to 6:00 pm, for mature readers, ages 15-18. This month’s book is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. 16-year-old Holden Caulfield struggles to find truth and resist phoniness after being expelled from prep school.

January 19 – Zombie Book Talk, 6:00 to 6:30 pm, for ages 15-18. What do you get when you take a classic Jane Austen novel and add in brain-eating undead? Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! Come discuss this entertaining mash-up of a classic!

January 21 – Teen Movie Matinee, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, for ages 13-18. Enjoy early release day in the Teen Room watching a movie with friends! Trivia Question: The movie Clueless was loosely based on which Jane Austen novel? Find out the answer when you attend the movie matinee!

January 21 – TAB Meeting, 4:30-5:30 pm, for current TAB Members, Teen Room Hosts, and interested Teen Volunteers. Come discuss plans for our upcoming teen events! New to TAB? Train to become a Teen Room Host!

January 21 – Romance Readers’ Teen Book Club, 5:30-6:00 pm, for ages 15-18. This month’s book is Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances by Lauren Myracle, John Green, and Maureen Johnson. Romance flourishes when the lives of three teens become unknowingly connected during a massive snow storm.

November 4 – Students’ Guide To: E-books & Databases, 4:30-5:00 pm, for ages 13-18. Need to practice for SATs, ACTs, and other exams? Got a big report due soon? Come learn about the library’s free online resources that are available 24/7 whenever you have a school assignment!

November 5 – Teen Novel Writing Challenge, 4:30-5:00 pm, ages 13-18. Think you have what it takes to be a writer? Take the challenge- write an entire novel in just 30 days! Come find out how as we celebrate National Novel Writing Month.

November 5 – Fantasy Fanatics’ Teen Book Club, 5:30-6:00 pm, for ages 15-18. Come discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling in celebration of the film version’s release this month! Enjoy licorice wands and butterbeer as we chat about our favorite Hogwarts characters!
